A Short Excerpt from Therest

When they reach the bank of elevators on the far end of the lobby, Cecil directs her to the final door in a row of six. A carved sign above the elevator reads “CEO Use Only” He removes a key card from his shirt pocket and swipes it on a small sensor. Elevators are generally cramped, industrial boxes. Something that serves its purpose and is forgotten. This elevator is opulent. A single door telescopes to the left revealing a pair of leather chairs positioned along the back wall with a single small table between them. A deep red carpet covers the floor and gold accents glisten off every surface. This is a level of luxury Lyla has never experienced.

Cecil enters the elevator followed by Lyla. He swipes his card on another panel just inside the door and settles into one of the chairs. He takes two glasses from inside a cabinet under the table and fills them with a dark brown liquor. “Take a seat, it’s a long way down.”

About

JDD Elliott

Growing up in upstate South Carolina, my summers were spent traveling between my grandparents homes. One week, my sister and I were dropped off at my dad's childhood home in the city. The next week, we would drive an hour out into the country to my Papa's small house on the lake. I was lucky. Spending that time in vastly different surroundings exposed me to people with unique points of view. I met people who chose the life they were living and I met people who had their life forced upon them. That perspective had a unique impact on the themes present in Therest.
